What is a psychology assessment?

A psychology assessment helps build a clearer picture of your child’s strengths, challenges, and development. We use interviews, questionnaires, and standardised tests to explore how your child is functioning across a range of key areas, including:

  • Emotional and behavioural regulation
  • Cognitive abilities
  • Social skills and peer relationships
  • Learning styles
  • Attention, memory, and executive functioning

You may seek a psychological assessment if you have concerns about your child’s development, learning, behaviour, or school performance. In some cases, teachers, GPs, or therapists may recommend an assessment after noticing signs that something may be affecting your child’s progress.

Assessments can help identify conditions such as autism (ASD), ADHD, and learning difficulties like dyslexia, while also highlighting your child’s strengths and support needs. The findings help families, educators, and healthcare professionals work together to plan the right supports and strategies for your child.

What does the assessment process look like?

Step 1: Initial Parent Consultation

Every assessment begins with a one-hour parent consultation with a Psychologist who specialises in assessments.

During this meeting, we will discuss:

  • Your child’s development
  • Current concerns
  • The most suitable assessment pathway.

Following this appointment, the psychologist will recommend one of our assessment options.

Our child-focused psychology assessments are tailored to your child’s age and needs.

The process typically includes:

  1. Initial parent consultation: We begin by understanding your concerns and gathering background information.
  2. Assessment sessions: During the assessment, your child will participate in a series of age-appropriate activities, and parents and teachers will complete questionnaires to provide additional information.
  3. Observations and interviews: We may observe your child at their school or early learning centre and consult with teachers or other professionals.
  4. Comprehensive report: You’ll receive a detailed report outlining findings, diagnoses (if applicable), and practical recommendations.
  5. Feedback session: We guide you through the results and next steps in a clear, supportive way.

No. Assessment fees are usually spread across 6 to 8 weeks, with invoices issued after each session. This includes any report writing and other non-face-to-face services.

There is no additional fee for reports or feedback session – these are included in the package costs.

Some parts of an assessment may also be eligible for NDIS funding, depending on your child’s plan and individual circumstances.

If your child is being assessed for autism or another neurodevelopmental condition, your Paediatrician or Psychiatrist may provide a Complex Neurodevelopmental Disorder (CNDD) referral (sometimes called a HCWA referral).

With this referral:

  • Medicare may provide a rebate for up to 4 psychology assessment sessions under Item 82000
  • The current rebate is $101.55 per eligible face-to-face session
  • If all four sessions are used, the total Medicare rebate is $406.20

Medicare rebates are only available for eligible face-to-face assessment sessions.

The following are not eligible for a Medicare rebate:

  • Telehealth appointments
  • Report writing
  • Scoring
